Boston Red Sox rookie Marcelo Mayer's 2025 MLB season is over after a recent announcement regarding his wrist injury.
The Boston Red Sox, who enter play on Sunday in a tie for the first wild card spot in the American League playoff race, will have to play the rest of the season
BOSTON (AP) — Boston Red Sox infielder Marcelo Mayer said Sunday that he’ll have season-ending surgery on his right wrist. The 22-year-old Mayer injured the wrist in late July, got an injection to try and come back, but decided to have surgery. He said he has a tear that hadn’t improved with the anti-inflammatory injection.
Manager Alex Cora revealed Sunday that Mayer will miss the rest of the season with a wrist injury that requires surgery, per Christopher Smith of Mass Live. It is expected to be a three-month recovery period, meaning he will at least be available for spring training ahead of the 2026 campaign.
The Red Sox selected Mayer with the No. 4 overall pick in the 2021 MLB draft. He was promoted to the big leagues at the end of May and through 44 games, slashed .228/.272/.402 with four home runs and 10 RBIs.
Anthony has been tearing it up since July, and has been an amazing leadoff hitter and good fielder for the Sox. Manager Alex Cora believes so too, but he also had high praise for another part of Anthony’s game, something he didn’t even know Anthony had; baserunning.
