Vietnam closed schools, airports, and evacuated thousands of people as it braced for powerful Typhoon Kajiki to make landfall Monday, threatening the country’s northeast with destructive winds and storm surges.

Typhoon Kajiki batters China's Hainan with heavy rain and wind as it moves towards Vietnam:: Sanya, China::Footage aired by CCTV showed emergency crews clearing debris from downed trees and reinforcing power lines in the resort city of Sanya.

Typhoon Kajiki, which has winds of up to 103mph, was due to hit Vietnam's central Thanh Hoa and Ha Tinh on Monday.
