As the regular season winds down before the playoffs heat up, it is time to recognize this week's outstanding high school boys basketball players. There are eight players who had a fantastic week from the Southwest Florida that have been selected as nominees.

It’s time to vote for The State’s boys basketball Players of the Week from Midlands-area high schools and games played from Jan. 27 to Feb. 1. Voting ends Friday at noon. The winner will be announced on Lou Bezjak’s Twitter page on Friday afternoon.

A transfer from Paul VI, Abreu brings tremendous quickness to the floor and does a nice job of getting to the glass. He’s averaging 13.6 points on a well-balanced attack and is also a top rebounder. Johnson basketball player Mack Martin won the public voting for the American-Statesman’s Austin-area boys athlete of the week sponsored by Thomas J. Henry Law for the week of Jan. 20-25. Martin received 45.89% of the vote and was more than 20% ahead of East View basketball player Gabe Banks.

Syracuse, N.Y. — Rome Free Academy’s Uzziah Grimes was voted this week’s syracuse.com boys basketball player of the week. The RFA senior put on a show to keep his Black Knights undefeated when they traveled to the Hoophall Invitational which featured some of the best teams from the northeast.
