ATHENS, Ga. — A judge has ordered a mental competency evaluation for Jose Ibarra, the man convicted of murdering 22-year-old nursing student Laken Riley, as Ibarra seeks to appeal his conviction.

Jose Ibarra was found guilty of Laken Riley’s murder in November and sentenced to life in prison without parole. His attorneys filed a motion for his appeal in December.
