Open Disk Utility and select the bare-bones Mac OS X for Intel installation partition (where you just installed Mac OS X for Intel) in the left-hand pane.

Disk Utility would not open. On my Mac mini upstairs running snow leopard 10.6.4 there was no problem opening Disk Utility. Has anyone else had this problem?

Open Disk Utility and you can select the external drive from a list of connected volumes and there is a Disk First Aid option to run a manual check on the disk to identify any issues worth noting.
