WhatsApp is reportedly working on a new feature that will allow users to create a username for their account, eliminating the need to show their phone number when connecting with other users.

WhatsApp could be taking the time to polish the username feature for all platforms, thus explaining its delay. The chat app is also working toward enabling usernames for WhatsApp channel owners.

In line with the WhatsApp beta for Android (version 2.23.25.19) update, WABetaInfo hinted that a username feature is underway. However, even beta testers can't access it as of writing.
