President Donald Trump is betting that a beleaguered Iran is so vulnerable following a tumultuous 18 months in the Middle East that it might finally be ready to abandon its nuclear program.

Iran and the United States begin high-stakes talks to reach a new nuclear deal on Saturday foreshadowed by President Trump’s threat of military strikes as a consequence of failure and Tehran’s warning any attack on it would drag the US into another Middle Eastern conflict.

The United States and Iran will hold their first serious talks in a decade this weekend. Both sides say they are willing to make a deal, but it is unclear whether their representatives will even sit in the same room.
