The tech company said Monday it has a “longstanding practice of applying name changes when they have been updated in official government sources.”

The change will only be visible to U.S. users. Those in Mexico will still see “Gulf of Mexico,” while those in the rest of the world will see both names on the map.

In compliance with an executive order signed by President Donald Trump, Google Maps will change the name of Gulf of Mexico to Gulf of America.

While Trump's order alters the U.S. government's official position regarding the Gulf of Mexico and Denali's names, it does not specifically direct companies to follow suit. Even so, Google confirmed that its Maps app will be renaming the Gulf of Mexico and Denali in an X post on Monday.

Google says it will take its cue from the U.S. government if it has to change the names of the Gulf of Mexico and Denali on its Maps service.

It is the firm's "longstanding practice" to observe updates from official sources - in this case requested by Donald Trump.

Google said the name changes, which also includes using Mount McKinley, will happen when Geographic Names Information System (GNIS) is updated.
