Six people associated with Zeghibe’s club in Norwood, Massachusetts, were killed in the plane crash: skater Spencer Lane and his mother, Molly, skater Jinna Han and her mother, Jin, and coaches Evgenia Shishkova and Vadim Naumov, a married couple who were world champion pairs figure skaters from Russia in the 1990s.

Wednesday night’s collision near Washington, DC, evoked painful memories of the 1961 crash that killed 73 people, including all 18 members of the US figure skating team headed to the world championships in Prague.

After the U.S. Figure Skating Championships, some young athletes stayed a couple of additional days for further development.

Two of those coaches were identified by the Kremlin as Russian figure skaters Evgenia Shishkova and Vadim Naumov.

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. — News of Wednesday night's crash over the Potomac River in Washington D.C. sent shockwaves through the figure skating community, including those at the Broadmoor Skating Club and U.S. Figure Skating in Colorado Springs.

Figure skaters and coaches returning from the U.S. national championships were aboard the American Airlines flight that collided with a Black Hawk helicopter.

Former world champions Evgenia Shishkova and Vadim Naumov were aboard the flight from Wichita, which hosted last week’s U.S.championships.

The ties to Boston conjured up painful memories for Nathan Birch, a Baltimore skater who grew up training at that very same club. He remembered seeing memorials from the 1961 crash, which killed several Boston club members, on the walls and in an upstairs lounge.

Members of The Skating Club of Boston gathered at the rink Thursday to share their grief about the six members of the community who were killed in a plane crash.

Once again, figure skaters representing the past, present and future of the sport perished in a catastrophic plane crash.
