The origin of the design comes from 1782, when the Continental Congress unveiled the design of the Great Seal of the United States of America ... currency on Civil War coins.
Before these coins, five cents were made from silver metal. This specimen has both patriotic and historic significance. It featured a shield inspired by the Great Seal of the United States.
