The Gatlinburg Ski Resort opened in January 1962 with only two slopes. After operating as Ober Gatlinburg for 50 years, the new owner rebranded the resort as Ober Mountain in 2022.

The warning came in a radio transmission at around 8:30 a.m. Gatlinburg evacuations didn't start until 8 p.m. later that day.

Eight of the 14 deaths attributed to the wildfire came as people fled in a mad rush on or around Ski Mountain Road, not far from Highway 441, which runs through Gatlinburg.

It's the earliest known suggestion the fire could hit Gatlinburg, and though park officials later alerted the city that the fire could leave the park, no one shared the assessment about Ski Mountain.
