Near-Earth Objects - UNOOSA
Jan 27, 2025 · A near-Earth object is an asteroid or comet which passes close to the Earth's orbit. In technical terms, a NEO is considered to have a trajectory which brings it within 1.3 astronomical units of the Sun and hence within 0.3 astronomical units, or approximately 45 million kilometres, of the Earth's orbit.

Dec 9, 2018 · The Near-Earth Object Surveillance Mission (NEOSM), will set up in space an infrared telescope designed to survey the Solar System for potentially hazardous asteroids. Its launch is planned by NASA in 2025 within the frame of its planetary Defense programme.

Jun 13, 2010 · More recently, the operation of dedicated near-Earth object (NEO) surveys has led to the discovery of a number of dual-designated objects that were initially identified as asteroids but were later found to exhibit cometary activity. 1 Most of these objects are bona fide comets that are simply difficult to resolve at large distances due to low ...
The debiased Near-Earth object population from ATLAS telescopes
Jan 1, 2025 · This work is dedicated to debias the Near-Earth Object (NEO) population based on observations from the Asteroid Terrestrial-impact Last Alert System (ATLAS) telescopes. We have applied similar methods used to develop the recently released NEO model generator (NEOMOD), once debiasing the NEO population using data from Catalina Sky Survey (CSS ...
2 NEAR-EARTH OBJECTS AND PLANETARY DEFENCE Forging global partnerships and building resilient societies through better coordination are among the key challenges of the twenty-first century. Given the global consequences of a near-Earth object (NEO) impact and the considerable resources required to prevent a collision, the United Nations,

May 15, 2019 · To be classified as a near-Earth object, the orbit perihelion distance (q) must be less than 1.3 astronomical units (AU). Amor objects (abbreviated AMO) are those whose perihelia are greater than 1.017 AU but less than 1.3 AU. Apollo objects (abbreviated APO) have semi-major axes (a) greater than 1 AU with q ≤ 1.017 AU. Aten objects ...

near-Earth objects to the Earth. It shall be the goal of the Survey program to achieve 90 percent completion of its near-Earth object catalogue (based on statistically predicted populations of near-Earth objects) within 15 years after the date of enactment of this Act.” NEO Observation Program
Into the beyond: A crewed mission to a near-Earth object
Jul 1, 2008 · The NASA Constellation Program wanted to understand what are some other feasible, high-value uses of the Orion spacecraft and Ares launch system other than a lunar return. One of the key feasible uses was the notion of the Orion spacecraft taking astronauts to visit a near-Earth object (NEO), most likely an asteroid.
near-Earth objects equal to or greater than 140 meters in diameter in order to assess the threat of such near-Earth objects to the Earth. It shall be the goal of the Survey program to achieve 90 percent completion of its near-Earth object catalogue (based on statistically predicted populations of near-Earth objects) within 15 years after the
